Time-gated backscattered ballistic light imaging of objects in turbid water

چکیده
Time-gated optical imaging of objects in turbid water was carried out in a backscattering geometry using light pulses of different pulse widths and a time-gated detection scheme with variable gate widths. Experimental results demonstrate that ultrashort pulsed illumination with ultrashort gated detection significantly improve image contrast as compared to any other combinations. These results are important for imaging objects embedded in turbid media, such as cloud, fog, smoke, murky water, and biological tissues for military, civilian, and medical applications. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. Ultrafast, cross-correlated harmonic imaging through scattering media.
A simple upconversion scheme utilizing 40-fs pulses is shown to permit high-contrast imaging of objects obscured by a highly scattering medium when no ballistic component is evident in the scattered light and imaging is performed with any portion of the scattered light pulse. We present a time-gated, inherently low-pass spatially filtered imaging method that minimizes signal-averaging requireme...
متن کاملBackscattered Imaging of Turbid Media
To study laser tissue interaction absorption and backscattering are the key factors to find the changes in structure and dynamics of turbid media such as complex fluids and biological tissues. Here a method to select suitable wavelength for maximum interaction with a particular type of tissue/tissue phantom, and study of backscattered light intensity at chosen wavelength with respect to change ...
متن کاملQuantitative image contrast enhancement in time-gated transillumination of scattering media.
Experimental work in turbid media has shown that trans-illumination images can be significantly improved by limiting light collection to a subset of photons which are minimally distorted by scattering. The literature details numerous schemes (commonly termed ballistic imaging), most often based on time-gating and/or spatially filtering the detected light. However, due to the complex nature of t...

We describe a new technique, femtosecond transillumination optical coherence tomography, for time-gated imaging of objects embedded in scattering media. Time gating is performed with a fiber-optic interferometer with femtosecond pulses and coherent heterodyne detection to achieve a 130-dB dynamic range. A confocal imaging arrangement provides additional spatial discrimination against multiply s...
متن کاملStatistical detection and imaging of objects hidden in turbid media using ballistic photons.
We exploit recent advances in active high-resolution imaging through scattering media with ballistic photons. We derive the fundamental limits on the accuracy of the estimated parameters of a mathematical model that describes such an imaging scenario and compare the performance of ballistic and conventional imaging systems. This model is later used to derive optimal single-pixel statistical tes...
